Check if a business name is taken

Got a name in mind? Check it everywhere at once: domain names across 23 TLDs, handles on 22 social and creator platforms, and collisions in the U.S. trademark register. One search, results stream in as they land.

Just the name. We lowercase it and strip the spaces before checking each platform.

What a name check should actually cover

Picking a brand name is one decision with three separate availability problems, and most people only check one of them. You can register the perfect .com and still discover the handle is taken on every platform your customers use, or worse, that someone already holds a federal trademark on the name in your category. This tool checks all three at once so you find the dealbreakers before you commit.

1. Domains (23 TLDs, live)

We query each TLD's authoritative registry over RDAP (the modern replacement for WHOIS), so availability is live, not cached. Beyond .com/.net/.org we check the extensions modern brands actually use: .io, .ai, .app, .dev, .co, .shop, .store and more. An "unknown" result means a registry's server was slow or rate-limiting at that moment. It never means "available."

2. Social & creator handles (22 platforms)

A name isn't really yours if you can't get the handle. We check Instagram, X, TikTok, YouTube-adjacent creator platforms, GitHub, Discord, Reddit, Telegram, Twitch, Medium, LinkedIn and more, each via that platform's own availability signal, not a guess. Results stream in one platform at a time, so the fast ones appear immediately while the slower ones finish.

3. Trademark collisions (USPTO)

The one most founders skip, and the one that can cost the most. We check your name against the U.S. trademark register (14 million records). An exact live match in your industry is a reason to think hard before filing or building a brand around the name. This is a first-pass signal, not legal advice. For a real conflict analysis, run our risk assessment.

Reading the results

  • Green = available: open to register/claim right now.
  • Grey = taken: already registered or in use.
  • Amber = unknown: the platform/registry didn't give a clear answer this run; re-check in a moment.

Found a name that's clear? Before you file, make sure it's safe in your specific Nice class: run it through our risk assessment, and use the class recommender to confirm which classes to file in.

Not legal advice

This tool surfaces availability signals across domains, social platforms, and the trademark register. It doesn't replace a trademark attorney or a full clearance search. For high-stakes naming decisions, confirm with counsel before you commit.

Business name checker FAQ

How do I check if a business name is already taken?
A name has three separate availability problems: the domain, the social handles, and the trademark. Enter your name above and we check all three at once: 23 domain TLDs (live via RDAP), 22 social/creator platforms, and the U.S. trademark register. Most people only check the domain and miss the other two.
Is a business name available if the .com is free?
Not necessarily. A free .com tells you nothing about whether the social handles are taken or whether someone holds a federal trademark on the name in your category, and a trademark conflict is the one that can force a costly rebrand. Check all three before you commit.
Does this check trademark availability too?
Yes. We check your name against the 14-million-record U.S. trademark register as a first-pass signal. For a deeper likelihood-of-confusion read in your specific Nice class, run our free trademark risk assessment.
Is the business name checker free?
Yes. Free, no signup. Results stream in as each domain, platform, and the trademark register respond.
