USPTO trademark search

Search 14.3 million United States federal trademark records by name. It finds the names close to yours, not only the exact spelling, which is the part that decides whether an application survives.

A match is not the whole answer. Whether any of these actually blocks you depends on the classes you sell in, and a name can be free in one class and taken in the next. The full availability check scores your name in your own classes, covers the international register and your logo, and gives one verdict. Also free.

How to read a result

  • Registered and pending mean the mark is live. Only a live mark can be cited against your application, so these are the rows that matter.
  • Abandoned means the applicant stopped: they missed a deadline, gave up, or lost. Cancelled means a registration lapsed or was struck. Both are dead, though a dead mark still shows the name has been wanted before.
  • Classes are the 45 categories of goods and services. Conflict is judged within related ones, which is why the same word can be registered by different owners in unrelated classes.
  • Similarity is our own measure of how close the spelling is to yours, not an official figure and not a prediction of refusal.

What this search covers, and what it does not

It searches the United States federal register, rebuilt from the USPTO's published files and last refreshed on 4 October 2026. It does not cover state registers, unregistered common-law rights, or marks filed only at offices outside the United States. The international search covers 611,000 Madrid System registrations alongside it.

One more limit worth stating plainly: this matches the wording of a mark. It cannot see a logo. If your brand has artwork, run the logo search as well, because a design can conflict even when the words do not.

Why similar names matter more than identical ones

The USPTO's own search, and most free tools built on top of it, match the text you type. But an application is not refused because someone registered your exact spelling. It is refused for a likelihood of confusion, weighed on how alike two marks are in sound, appearance and meaning across related goods and services. That is why an exact search is the one search almost guaranteed to miss the filing that stops you, and why this one is built to be fuzzy.

Questions

Is this search free?

Yes, and there is no account, no limit and nothing to buy. The deeper checks on this site are free as well.

Does it find similar names or only exact ones?

Similar ones. Type NORTHWIND and NORTHWYND and NORTH WIND come back too. That matters because an application is refused for likelihood of confusion, judged on similarity in sound, appearance and meaning, so the filings most likely to block yours are rarely spelled the way yours is.

What does the status on each result mean?

Registered and pending marks are live and can be cited against a new application. Abandoned and cancelled marks are dead: the owner stopped, or the registration lapsed. A dead mark is far less of a problem, though it can still show that a name has been fought over.

Where does the data come from?

The USPTO publishes its register as daily files. We rebuild our copy from them every day, which is why a result here can be opened against the office's own record. For anything that matters, the office's file is the version that counts.

Does this replace a trademark attorney?

No. It is the first pass, and it rules names out quickly, which is most of the practical value. It does not cover state registers or unregistered common-law rights, and it does not weigh the arguments an examiner or an opponent would make. For a filing that matters, have an attorney run a full search.

Can I search by logo instead of by name?

Yes, with the logo search on this site. It compares your artwork against the registered logos on the U.S. and international registers by the shape of the image, by what the image depicts and by the wording inside it. No text search of any kind does this.

Data scope: USPTO federal register. Not covered: state registers, unregistered common-law marks, and marks filed directly at national offices outside the United States. A clean result is a strong signal, not a clearance opinion.
